TASHKENT, 13 August 2006 - Through a joint project with the Legal Clinic under the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED), UNDP starts summer school for law students from several Tashkent Universities on "Civil Judicial Procedure: From Theory to Practice" in the Charvak resort area "Pyramids" on 13-20 August 2006 to enhance their professional skills in the area of civil procedure .

The extensive training course of the Summer School gathered 38 students from UWED, State Law Institute,  National University of Uzbekistan, Tashkent International Westminster University and other Universities.  The school will be facilitated for the whole week by Legal Experts from the Legal Clinic under UWED, as well as professionals working in the area of Civil Law such as judges and lawyers.  Through interactive sessions and role plays on legal proceedings, the students will enhance their knowledge of international and national standards of justice, as well as practical skills that will be used in their work with vulnerable populations.

One of the experts, Ms. Gulnora Ishankhanova, Chair of the Tashkent City Bar Association of Uzbekistan said, “I think this summer school is a unique opportunity for students to meet and learn from legal practitioners. This is a good chance to stimulate their academic learning and enhance practical skills necessary while providing legal services to citizens”.

The summer school is organized within the UNDP project “Legal Aid and Legal Literacy for Better Access to Justice ”.  The main objectives of the project are to improve access to justice for people who cannot afford or have limited access to legal services, such as women, the poor, the elderly and people with disabilities and to increase quality of legal services through training of law students.
