The sweet smell of hot baked bread fills the room, where girls and boys are busy with their daily tasks at the ‘Mehrjon’ Bread Factory in Djizzak city. Thanks to the UNDP Enhancing Legislative and Institutional Environment for Equal Opportunities for Women and Men in Uzbekistan (Equal Opportunities) project now more than 30 women and men will have access to work and the chance to improve their livelihoods. more

Tashkent, 5 June, 2010 – Right in the centre of our capital Tashkent in Mirzo-Ulugbek park on Saturday June the 5th, 2010 citizens of the capital and its guests have witnessed the greatest environmental activities in Uzbekistan, celebration of the World Environmental Day (WED) organized jointly by UNDP/GEF “Small Grants Programmes” and the State Committee for Nature Protection in Uzbekistan. Among active participants and contributors were also all UNDP projects working in environment and energy areas. Participants have actively participated in the various contests and quizzes organized by Small Grants Programme and other projects including UNDP/GEF “Promoting Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings” project. more

In distant Karakalpakstan in Uzbekistan, Suleyma is cooking a pot of national rice dish on her stove. Although Ibrohim and Suleyma never met they have one thing in common. Together they are in protecting the environment for today and tomorrow generations. How can making pots and cooking on a stove help protect the environment? Well with the help of the European Union (EU) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Uzbekistan it has become a reality which not only does help making money and house chores easier, but also protects the environment. more
