Assistance to the UN Theme Group on HIV/AIDS in its efforts to mobilize and support to the coordinated national response to HIV/AIDS.
Background
The UN Theme Group on HIVIAIDS in Uzbekistan was established in 1999 to support an expanded
multisectoral response to the HIVIAIDS epidemic. It has become a key mechanism for coordinated and joint UN action at the country level.
The Theme Group provides a structure enabling the various agencies to coordinate United Nations support to the national response to HIVIAIDS. The Agencies through the Theme Group on HIVIAIDS:
undertake information collection, analysis and exchange; advocate and promotes an expanded, multisectoral response to HIVIAIDS including issues of human rights; undertake advocacy; provide financial and technical support to the national response; undertake joint planning and action; mobilize resources; share experiences; increase the UN country team's understanding of HIVIAIDS and its commitment to the national response.
Objectives
The objective of the project is to assist the UN Theme Group on HIVIAIDS in its efforts to mobilize and support the coordinated national response to HIVIAIDS.
Achievements & expected results
The project will facilitate the implementation of the following activities:
1. Coordinate the cooperation with UNAIDS co-sponsors in implementation and execution of UN and
other interested parties' joint projects on HIVIAIDSlSTDs prevention in Uzbekistan.
2. Promote the policies and strategies of UNAIDS, advising on adapting those to meet local needs
and conditions, advocate to increase interest and educate on international best practices and
impacts of AIDS.
3. Coordinate the in-country consultative process and facilitate access by governmental and nongovernmental organizations to the UN Theme Grouplco-sponsor support.
