The Assistant Administrator and Regional Director of the UNDP Bureau for Europe and the Commonweal of Independent States Ms. Cihan Sultanoglu, who was on a weeklong visit to Uzbekistan, met with a selected range of well-known and respected women who currently play an active role in various sectors of policy making, economy, civil society and business community. Specifically, participants of the meeting included a member of the Parliament, deputy chairperson of Women’s Committee, a representative of Trade Union’s Federation, chairperson of the Business Women’s Association and director of a local NGO. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss women’s issues in Uzbekistan with focus on enhancing women’s participation in decision-making and promoting women’s rights protection. more

“Measures to Reduce the Level of Subventions to Local Budgets: Interagency Interaction” -that is the name of the analytical report developed with support from a UNDP project on budget system reform in Uzbekistan. A subvention is a fund allocated from the central budgets to a local budget. In the case of Uzbekistan, local budgets are responsible for expenditures in key social sectors including pre-university education, public health and social protection.However, there are insufficient budget revenues in certain economically-disadvantaged provinces. How do they fill the gap between the State budget and local budgets?

The ‘Tashabbus - 2013’ competition, recently held at Tashkent’s ‘Turkiston Palace’, has exhibited the ingenuity, productivity and creativity that fuels the growth of Uzbekistan’s business sector. ‘Tashabbus’ means innovation, the driving force behind new business. Attended by over 7000 entrepreneurs including artisans and craftspeople, independent farmers and gourmet food producers, innovative businesspeople and youth with an eye for the next best thing, the event was a valuable opportunity to recognise Uzbekistan’s business role models, and to encourage more citizens to turn creative ideas into profitable realities.

Establishing a successful business requires two things, an inventive mind and skills for finance and organisation. In Uzbekistan, as in the rest of the world, entrepreneurs have plenty of unique business ideas but not necessarily the skills and abilities to follow those through. For a fledgling entrepreneur, developing a business plan and obtaining a bank loan can be challenging hurdles to overcome. more
