Democratic Governance
In order to contribute effectively to the enhancement of living standards corresponding reforms in the area of good governance are essential. In the United Nations' Millennium Declaration, the international community reached a consensus that good governance is not only an aim in itself, but also a key factor in attaining human development and in successful poverty reduction and peace-building.
UNDP's task of promoting good governance includes a wide range of activities. Through its portfolio of good governance projects, UNDP in Uzbekistan is trying to develop capacities of national institutions in Uzbekistan for their effectiveness and efficiency, promote accountability and transparency, work at the policy level, provide policy advice to national partner institutions, improve citizens' access to public, social and legal services.
UNDP is sharing its experience in integrating and implementing e-governance into public administration - increasing efficiency and transparency. In addition, training of civil servants contributes to human resource development for effective governance and raises awareness among a new generation of civil servants on the impacts of Information and Communication Technologies and e-governance.
In raising awareness on international human rights principles and enhancing the population's access to justice, UNDP is working to develop a stronger understanding of national legislation and international human rights standards within the population, gender equality, as well as enhance the capacity of legal professionals in order to strengthen the quality of available legal services, especially to the most vulnerable groups of population. In addition, UNDP is working on improvement of the legislative framework and foreign policy of Uzbekistan.
Good governance allows a responsible economic and financial management of public and natural resources for the purpose of economic growth, social development and poverty reduction in an equitable and sustainable manner.
